Random Thought of the Day: What is Feminism?

fem·i·nism noun \ˈfe-mə-ˌni-zəm\

1:  the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

2:  organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests
— fem·i·nist  noun or adjective
— fem·i·nis·tic  adjective

I hear so many women throwing around this word.  Feminism.  Yet, whenever you hear it being talked about it is usually about how men treat us like objects, or how men are our enemies.  But above is the true definition of feminism.  It is what the generations of women before us fought for.  Not a battle between the sexes, but the equality of the sexes.  This isn't about him vs me.  It's about me being a better and stronger and more independent me.  It's not about him at all.

The worst part about this whole new feminism movement is that it isn't the men who are doing the oppressing.  It is us, fellow women who feel threatened in one way or another and feel the need to tear each other down.  Hate to break it to you, but we are more cruel to each other than any man could ever hope to be.  How many times have we heard a woman refer to another woman as a whore or bitch?  And equally how many times have we heard a woman say "If she were prettier she would..." or if "She was smarter she would...".

It's very disheartening for me to hear us degrade each other, even when we don't mean to.  We hold each other to the standard we see in magazines, yes ladies that is US doing it not the men.  Those women are usually touched up and photoshopped to the point of almost being unrecognizable.  Check out this link from greatnessoverload who actually is pretty awesome!  Celebs being photoshopped.  Scary stuff right?  So guess what?  NO ONE IS PERFECT.

To be honest this is hitting in almost every single part of society.  Even in gaming women have stereotypes that they are supposed to be boxed into.  Truth is, we are all different.  We have different desires, hobbies, personalities, bodies, loves, fears, goals.  Just like anyone else.  So whether you are a working woman or a woman of leisure (my goal someday), or a mom who loves being at home with your kids, the point is, you are you and YOU get to make that choice.  Feminism is about being able to have the choice to live your life your way.  It is about being able to be equal to men without tearing them down.  It is about having your voice heard.  It is also about being able to love yourself.

So ladies, be good to each other.  Be good to the men in your life, they aren't your enemy.  Be good to yourself.  Live your life, and let others live theirs.  Be supportive of your fellow sisters and celebrate in each others victories.  And if you are in a place in your life where you can help out another woman, reach back and grab her hand.  Bring her with you on the journey and celebrate her when she finds her destination.

We are powerful individually.  We are unstoppable together.
