Rock Chick Renegade Review

Jules has got a score to settle against the drug dealers of Denver. Vance has made it his mission that Jules won’t get dead while dishing out vigilante justice. Jules doesn't have time for romance, she’s too busy saving the world and she enlists Zip (the gunstore owner), Heavy (an ex-PI) and Frank (a mysterious recluse) to help.

The Rock Chicks of Fortnum’s Bookstore get involved to provide romantic advice and guidance, none of which Jules accepts at first. The Hot Bunch of Nightingale Investigations adopt Jules as one of their own. Even though Jules tries to hang on to her inner Head Crackin’ Mamma Jamma, the Rock Chicks; Hot Bunch; Jules’s long-suffering Uncle Nick; Jules’s friend the rotund, African-American, Jackie-O wannabe, May; and especially Vance will stop at nothing to wear her down.

But Jules makes some bad guys pretty angry and one is dedicated to taking her out. Vance and the Hot Bunch have to pull out all the stops to keep her alive. At the same time, Jules and Vance learn the true meaning of home but once they find this precious entity they've been searching for all their lives, will Jules’s enemies tear it away?

Jules and Vance's story is one of the strongest in the series in my opinion.  They are both interesting characters who have backgrounds that are not necessarily happy.  Jules is a strong heroine and Vance is the ultimate alpha male.  Together they are an irresistible couple who makes you root for them and what they could have together from the very beginning.  And I was team Julance all the way!  Yes, I really did just Brangelina those two!  LOL

Jules is beautiful.  She is described as old Hollywood beautiful.  And it is nice to see that she has no real clue about that.  In the previous Rock Chick novels our heroines are very self aware.  They know they are beautiful and they flaunt it, Juliet is nothing like that.  She is barely aware of the male species as a whole.  Until she runs, literally, into Vance Crowe.  Jules' background hurt my heart so much.  Losing her family so young in a car accident that nearly killed her as well.  Then losing the aunt who took her in when she was a teen, leaving her with a brokenhearted uncle, who did everything he could for her.

Vance is the kind of man that a girl has fantasies about but never actually meets.  He is very quiet and controlled (unless there is a valid reason not to be, like when he found Roxie in RC Redemption).  He is aware of who he is and where he has come from.  A recovering alcoholic and ex-con, we see our first taste of an imperfect, yet wonderful hero in this series.  Lee, Hank, & Eddie have all been stand up (if not a tad shady) guys.  Vance is our first taste of gray.  Having been kicked out of the reservation he was raised in as a child and left with nothing, we see who he has become and why he is the way he is.

This story also shows a selfless side of our Rock Chick heroine.  Jules has taken to the streets to try and slow down drugs being sold.  Drugs that killed one of the kids at her shelter.  Jules tends to try to save the world and it comes as no surprise that she ends up needing someone to save her.  Most notably Vance.  Vance being a protector, is immediately drawn to the selfless and beautiful Jules.  He feels her to his bones and will stop at nothing to save her, even from herself.

This was the hardest of the RC novels for me to read up until Regret, because of what happens to Jules.  I cried when I thought our girl wasn't going to make it.  I cried for Vance, I cried for the kids she helped, I cried for her uncle who would be lost without her, I cried a lot for a beautiful girl who I desperately wanted to get her happily ever after.   And Kristen Ashley didn't disappoint.  They do find their HEA...and it is beautiful.

As the novels in the RC series progressed, I found I still loved getting tid bits on this couple.  I loved that they had babies and got married and just seem to be genuinely happy.

I give this 5 lipsticks for being my favorite in the series....go go go go go read it!
