Rock Chick Reckoning Review

Stella’s the lead singer and lead guitarist of the Blue Moon Gypsies and Stella used to be Mace’s girl. Mace broke up with her though and the loss of him rocked her world. But Stella gets a call, late at night (again) from one of the members of her crazy band. She has to go play clean up (again) and runs into Mace (and a shed load of police) and ends up getting shot.

Mace finds he doesn't like it much that his ex-girlfriend got shot, right in front of him but it’s worse. A very bad man has thrown down the gauntlet and ALL the Rock Chicks are in the firing line. Stella doesn't want Mace to be the one to keep her alive but she has no choice… mainly because Mace isn't giving her one.

Stella Gunn is a local rockstar who essentially is afraid to move forward because she fears her family.  A family who quite frankly, doesn't love her or want her in their lives.  Actually if I am honest, this part of the story made absolutely no sense to me.  She is afraid to succeed because her family who has turned their backs on her, for being born female mind you, might not like it?  Really?  This is a thing that has to be worried about?  Honest to goodness, I thought the point of being successful was to show those who doubted you that you made it despite them.  But I digress....

Stella in my opinion is very very very selfish.  I know she is beautiful, I know she is talented, I know she comes from a crap background, but seriously she should be the one who is the most understanding in the group.  She has a lot going for her.  And to top it all off, she has Kai Mason.  He is my dream boat from this series (other than Lee of course).  But instead of being excited and showing love for Mace she lets him deal with her problems so she can sleep, she lets him brood without trying to figure out what is going on with him, she never lets him close and tells him anything about herself and why she is the way she is, and then she is SHOCKED when he kicks her to the curb.  Really?

Kai "Mace" Mason's story was the one I was looking forward to the most!  In all the RC novels before this one, he was interesting and mysterious.  And although his story is pretty shocking and cool, the mix with Stella just made it almost unbearable to read at times.  I still don't even understand the attraction between these two.  Mace was the broody badass and should have fallen for someone like Jules.  Someone strong and capable.

The story also made me feel like I had missed something vital when I started reading it.  When the book opens up, we are thrust into a world of chaos and gunfire.  There is a new big bad out to get the guys, by targeting the girls, and I don't even know why.  It is explained obviously later in the book, but it felt like it came out of left field.  I was completely blindsided.  Of course while all this is going on, Stella still feels the need to perform.  Because that takes priority when your life is in danger and all.

Mace's father makes an appearance and we learn that he is pretty much as awful as we thought he might be. And we meet his and his little sister's mothers as well.  Both seem like complete sweethearts.  Mace's back story made me cry.  I felt heartsick over what happened to his baby sister and to what happened to his family.  A gifted athlete who, like Stella, wasn't loved by his father.  I guess this is the common bond they share, too bad Mace turned out to be a decent human being that cares and worries about others and Stella turned out to be a selfish shrew.

I love KA.  I love her novels.  But her Stella character made me homicidal.  I don't care how talented or beautiful you are.  There is never any reason to be this self involved and ignore the pain of others.  Yes Stella tries to redeem herself by bringing Mace's moms to him and helping them forge a bond again, but by then I just didn't care.

Of the entire series of books, this was my absolute least favorite.  I adore this entire series and I was looking forward to this book the most because I LOVED Mace so much.  I found him ridiculously interesting in all the books leading up to this one, and where KA took his character, broke my heart.

I give this 3 lipsticks.  It actually hurt to write that.
