Bared To You: A Crossfire Novel Review

Our journey began in fire... Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness-beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I'd never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily... Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other's most private wounds... and desires. The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart... "When it comes to brewing up scorchingly hot sexual chemistry, Day has few literary rivals." -- Booklist

Good God, where do I start?  Well I guess it is safe to say that I took my damn time getting to this book!  This was another case of so much hype that I was afraid it was going to not live up to what I needed it to be, so I didn't give it a shot.  My mistake.  There is a third coming in this series (because isn't there always nowadays?) and I figured if I wanted to read it, I would need to read the first two.

Gideon....jesus I felt bad for this guy.  To be beautiful, powerful, wealthy, irresistible, and still be that screwed up is beyond sad to me.  I know he was abused, got that, but they don't really talk about it.  What I really did like was his possessiveness of Eva.  There is a certain fragility to Gideon that makes him even more special.  Something that tells you there is more to this man than his money and good looks.

Eva and her mother annoyed the living hell out of me.  No joke.  It got to the point where I was hoping Gideon would go for someone else like Maggie or Corrine.  Seriously she is so winey and more than a little self involved.  Yes I get she wants her independence and hates people infringing on that.  I completely understand.  But come on now, there is more to life than how everything affects you.  Jesus.

I don't understand how two people this messed up from their pasts can make a serious go of this relationship.  Maybe that will become more clear in the next book.  Because honestly there isn't one person in this novel that isn't seriously damaged.  Cary, Eva's bestie. is a complete hot mess.  Maggie and Corrine are both in love with Gideon who basically sees right through them.  Gideon's whole family seems dysfunctional.  And Eva's mom & stepdad are ridiculously overprotective and manipulative.  It's just a mess all around.

The core love story is beautiful.  It really is.  But I can't help thinking that I hope the second book is better...

I give it 3.5 lipsticks...
